Privacy Policy

We value your privacy. This policy explains how we handle information when you use this tool.

1. Data controller and contact

The data controller for this website is the site operator. If you have any questions about this policy or wish to exercise your privacy rights, please contact us at connorlin072@gmail.com.

2. How we handle your text

The core features (character-to-pinyin conversion, polyphonic detection, and simplified/traditional conversion) run entirely in your browser. The text you type or paste is never uploaded, stored, or transmitted to our servers. Results are discarded when you close the page, unless you choose to export them yourself.

3. Picture Book Studio: drafts and illustrations

Picture Book Studio (open the studio) stores considerably more content than the annotation tool, so its data handling is described separately:

  • Local draft. The book you create — title, text, layout settings and any corrected readings — is saved automatically in your own browser storage (IndexedDB, falling back to localStorage), so your work is still there when you return. This data stays on your device and is never uploaded to our servers; we cannot read it. Clearing your browser data or choosing "New book" removes the draft.
  • Illustrations. Images you upload are read, compressed and laid out entirely inside your browser. The image file itself is never uploaded. The result exists only in the current page and in your local draft.
  • Project files. So that you can back up your work or move it to another device, "Export project" writes a .pbproj.json file to your own device containing the book's text and illustration data. Where that file goes, and who you give it to, is entirely up to you; we never see it.
  • PDF export. The exported PDF is generated in your browser and downloaded straight to your device. It does not pass through any server.
  • No cloud features. There is no account system, no online library, no share link and no cloud sync, so no data of that kind is collected either.

4. Use of cookies

Cookies are small text files stored on your device. This website may use the following types of cookies:

  • Essential cookies: used to remember whether you dismissed the cookie notice, and necessary for the website to function correctly.
  • Advertising cookies: set by third-party advertising services such as Google AdSense to serve personalized or non-personalized ads and measure ad performance.

5. Third-party advertising (Google AdSense)

This website may display ads served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites, including advertising cookies and identifiers.

You can:

  • For users in the EEA and UK, consent to or reject personalized ads via Google's certified Consent Management Platform (CMP);
  • Visit Google Ads Settings to manage personalized ad preferences;
  • Visit www.aboutads.info/choices to learn about and opt out of interest-based advertising.

For more on how Google collects and uses data, see the Google Privacy Policy and how Google uses information from sites or apps that use their services.

6. Legal bases for processing (GDPR)

For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and other GDPR jurisdictions:

  • Our legal basis for essential cookies is legitimate interests (to provide core site functionality);
  • Our legal basis for personalized advertising is your explicit consent. You may withdraw consent at any time via Google's Consent Management Platform (CMP).

7. Data sharing and disclosure

Apart from the third-party advertising provider (Google) where necessary to serve ads, we do not sell, rent, or disclose your personal information to third parties.

8. Data retention

Because core features run locally, we do not retain your text on our servers. Your cookie consent is retained for the lifetime of the relevant cookie; you can clear or change it at any time via "Cookie Settings".

9. Your rights

Under applicable law (in particular the GDPR), you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we process about you;
  • Rectification of inaccurate data;
  • Erasure of your personal data;
  • Restriction of processing and the right to object;
  • Data portability;
  • Withdraw consent at any time (without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing).

To exercise these rights, contact us at connorlin072@gmail.com.

10. Children's privacy

This service — both the pinyin annotation tool and Picture Book Studio — is a general-purpose creative tool for parents, teachers and other adult users preparing reading and teaching materials for children. It is not a product directed at children under 13, and it is not intended to be used by children directly. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Updates will be posted on this page with a notice where appropriate. Please review it periodically.
