Common Polyphonic Characters (多音字)

Over 80 characters with more than one reading, grouped by the kind of rule that decides it — with the example words that make each reading visible.

Why one character can have several readings

A polyphonic character — 多音字 in Chinese — is a single written form with more than one spoken reading and, crucially, more than one meaning distributed across those readings. This is not a defect of the writing system or a residue of random historical accident, although history is part of it. In most cases the different readings encode a genuine grammatical or semantic distinction that Chinese marks in speech but not in writing: zhǎng and cháng are different words that happen to share the character 长, exactly as English "read" covers two different tenses without changing its spelling.

For a learner, polyphonic characters matter for two distinct reasons and it is worth separating them. The first is reading: coming across 行 in a text and not knowing whether it is xíng or háng makes the sentence opaque. The second is production: if you have memorised a character with one reading, you will pronounce it that way in every word, and mispronunciation in speech is harder to notice and harder to correct than a mistake made while reading. A third case is specific to anyone preparing materials: annotating a passage with the wrong reading teaches that wrong reading to whoever uses the sheet, which is why annotation tools flag uncertain readings instead of silently choosing.

This page collects the characters that actually cause trouble in practice, roughly in descending order of how often they appear in real texts. High-frequency function words come first, because a mistake there repeats in every paragraph. Below the themed groups there is a section on the strategies that decide a reading, which is the part to read if you only read one section.

Two related pages: the tone change rules explain readings that shift because of a neighbouring tone rather than because of meaning, and the 500 essential characters list gives the default reading for every character in the high-frequency bands, which is the reading to assume when the context gives you nothing to go on.

How to decide which reading applies

There is no single algorithm, and anyone who claims otherwise has not worked through enough real text. But five strategies between them resolve the great majority of cases, and they are worth applying in this order.

1. Decide by meaning first

The most reliable signal, and the one to reach for first, is meaning. In the overwhelming majority of polyphonic characters, each reading corresponds to a distinct sense that you can state in a few words, and the sense is determined by the word the character sits in. 长 is cháng when the sense is "long" (长短, length) and zhǎng when the sense is "to grow, to become senior" (长大, to grow up; 校长, headmaster). 数 is shù for the concept "number" and shǔ for the action "to count". Once you can name the sense, the reading follows. The practical consequence is that you should learn polyphonic characters through words, not characters: memorising 长 as "cháng/zhǎng" gives you nothing to act on, while memorising 长短, 长大, 校长, 长处 gives you four anchored examples and four chances to generalise.

2. Then check the part of speech

A large subset of the problem is a noun–verb split. 种 is zhǒng as a noun ("kind", 种类) and zhòng as a verb ("to plant", 种树). 处 is chù as a noun ("place", 住处) and chǔ as a verb ("to handle", 处理). 卷 is juǎn as a verb ("to roll") and juàn as a noun ("a volume, an exam paper"). 磨 is mó for the abstract action and mò for the concrete noun 磨盘, a millstone. When a character is ambiguous and you can identify the grammatical slot — is this the subject or the predicate? — the part-of-speech strategy often settles it instantly. It is listed second only because meaning is more often decisive and more often available.

3. Treat fixed compounds as vocabulary, not as rules

Some readings survive only inside a handful of fixed words, and no productive rule generates them. 提 is dī only in 提防 (to guard against) and 提溜; 似 is shì only in 似的; 佛 is fú only in 仿佛; 亲 is qìng only in 亲家; 色 is shǎi in practice only in 掉色 and 色子. Trying to derive a rule for these wastes time. Learn the word, note that the character has a second reading there, and move on. A useful heuristic: if a reading is listed in a dictionary but you have never met it in a word, it is a special case, and you will meet it as a word when you need it.

4. Separate the colloquial reading from the formal one

A recurring pattern is a formal or literary reading used in written compounds and a colloquial reading used in everyday speech, often with the same meaning. 血 is xuè in written compounds (血液, blood) and xiě in ordinary speech and as a standalone word (流血, to bleed). 熟 is shú in standard usage (熟悉, familiar) and shóu colloquially. 塞 is sāi in daily use, sè in literary compounds such as 堵塞, and sài for a military stronghold. The practical rule for a learner is to use the formal reading in writing and in any exam context, and to recognise the colloquial reading when you hear it. Do not assume that hearing xiě in conversation means xuè is wrong; they are both correct in their own registers.

5. Expect surnames and place names to break the rules

Chinese surnames are a closed set with their own readings that frequently contradict the everyday one, and place names preserve older pronunciations long after the general language has moved on. 单 is ordinarily dān (简单, simple) but shàn as a surname. 仇 is chóu (hatred) but qiú as a surname. 解 is jiě (to explain) but xiè as a surname. 查 is chá (to check) but zhā as a surname. 区 is qū (district) but ōu as a surname. 任 is rèn (task) but rén as a surname and in 任县. 秘 is mì (secret) but bì in 秘鲁, Peru. 燕 is yàn (a swallow) but yān in 燕京 and 燕山. 济 is jì (economy) but jǐ in 济南. Because these are unpredictable, treat them as a list to recognise rather than a system to apply, and check the reading before you say a person's name aloud or annotate a place name in a text you are preparing.

Where this leaves the learner

Notice that only the first two strategies are productive. Meaning and part of speech will carry you through ordinary reading, because in a real sentence the surrounding words supply exactly the information you need. The remaining three are about recognition rather than generation. That asymmetry explains why the most efficient way to handle polyphonic characters is not to memorise a table but to read a great deal with correct pinyin in front of you, so the right reading arrives with the context attached. When you are producing materials for other people, the same asymmetry becomes a risk: an incorrect annotation looks authoritative, which is why it is worth verifying readings rather than guessing.

Surnames and place names: the readings that break the rules

Anyone preparing annotated reading material for other people should check names specifically, because a misread surname is immediately noticeable to a native reader and undermines the whole document.

Working with polyphonic characters in real texts

The practical problem with polyphonic characters is not that they are hard to learn in isolation; it is that they are invisible until they cause a mistake. A reader who has internalised the wrong reading for 行 will read 银行 as yín xíng without hesitation and without any sense that something is wrong. The same applies in reverse to anyone producing study materials: an annotated passage in which 着 has been given the wrong reading looks entirely normal on the page, and the error propagates to every learner who uses the sheet.

Two habits prevent most of this. The first is to learn new vocabulary in whole words rather than characters, so that the reading is stored together with the context that determines it. The second is to verify uncertain readings rather than guess. This is where the online pinyin tool is useful: paste a passage and it returns the text with pinyin above every character, and — this is the important part — characters with more than one reading are flagged rather than silently resolved, so you can select the correct one from the list. Because the tool marks the dictionary reading and lets you choose, it behaves like a careful reference rather than an oracle, which is the right model for polyphonic characters.

When annotating for other people, a useful discipline is to check the readings of every polyphonic character in the passage before exporting, with particular attention to surnames and place names, since those follow the rules least predictably. For the frequency-ordered list of characters with their default readings — the reading to assume when nothing in the context points elsewhere — continue to 500 essential characters. For sounds that shift because of a neighbouring tone rather than because of meaning, see tone change rules; if the difficulty is not choosing a reading but producing the contrast at all — the retroflex series, the nasal finals, ü after j, q, x — that is covered in commonly mispronounced sounds. The sound inventory itself is laid out in the pinyin chart, and the rest of the series is indexed in the Tutorials. To apply all of this directly, paste a passage into the online pinyin tool: it annotates every character with its reading and flags the polyphonic ones so you can pick the correct reading for the sentence, which is exactly the step at which the wrong choice would otherwise slip through unnoticed.
